Hey all.
I'm currently using a DI4000 rackmount 4-channel direct box to bring sounds from guitar and keyboard over to my preamps a couple rooms away. This is a Behringer product, and is unsatisfactory for a couple reasons: - There isn't very good channel isolation... if there's a loud signal or noise on one channel it'll pretty noticably bleed through to the others. - If any two channel inputs share the same ground -- for example, if they're both from the same instrument, such as the stereo outs of a keyboard or digital effects pedal -- then some nasty ground loop problem occurs, causing humming. I've never been able to fix this problem, and I'm convinced it's a design flaw in the DI4000 itself. I've tried all manner of ground lifts and what-have-you, with no success. - I'm not sure, but I think the LED meters add noise to the signal when they turn on and off -- a problem that affects a lot of Behringer stuff, apparently. (This certainly happens on Behringer's headphone amplifiers... but i'm not as concerned about that because it's not on my recording signal path). So yeah. I'm looking for a higher quality product that has basically the same functionality. Namely: A 4-channel active rackmount DI box. Preferably having the inputs and link/buffered outs on the back and the XLR outputs on the front, so I don't have to change my setup too much. Also, I'd ideally like it to be under $500. (The Whirlwind hotbox quad would have been perfect, if it wasn't almost twice as much as I'm willing to pay). So. Any ideas? Preferably ones that people have had some experience with, and know to be high quality products. Thanks! Ken |
