Default building new DAW for logic audio 5.51 - P4 or Amd....

Hey there,

I run the latest available version of emagics PC logic audio.

I use a mix of 8 + vsti's, 12 + audio tracks, plus at least one or two
vst + logic fx on each of those tracks, in addition to creamware dsp
card processing.

It seems lately, both P4 and AthlonXP camps are keeping up with the
pace the other sets.... but does anybody have any useful hints or
experiences they'd like to share in regards to what would be a better
buy for me ?

Please, no 'amd are **** coz they aren't P4' type comments, i've seen
enough of those already.

PS, I'm currently running a GB-7DX+ type motherboard, kt266 (yuck)
chipset, amd athlon 1700XP and its okay but it runs out of steam way
before I'd like it to. I have a creamware luna2, and have disabled
everything on the MB i'm not using. Also running win2K, but will
probably go back to XP....

OK, but how about "no Logic cos it's history" ? But I guess your buying
decisions will apply equally to whatever you eventually replace Logic with.

I went with a P4 3.0 "Northwood" with an 800MHz FSB.

The price/performance of the Athlon 64 is still a bit "Bleeding Edge."
Maybe next year.

The "Prescott" core's are improving, but, again, they aren't there yet.
Right now, they run slow and hot, and you pay a premium for them.

I've heard only good things about Extreme Edition P4s, but again, you're
paying top dollar.

The older Athlon XP models tend to run hot, and I was speccing my
cooling solutions for "low noise and simple" -- low-speed fans rather
than anything exotic, so I thought it wise to avoid Athlons on that
basis.

The Athlon-64s seem to have the heat problem licked. By next June, they
may well be worth the extra money.

If you can find a two-headed ATI Radeon 8500-based video card, buy it. More
than Good Enough, and relatively inexpensive.

I'm running a passively-cooled Radeon 9200-based card that's stayed cool
as a cucumber so far. Two-headed, but one was a DVI and it didn't ship
with a DVI connector, so I had to buy one for ~$10.

The highest CPU temp I've seen so far has been 25C, with usual temps
around 20C. I'd call that WAY more than Good Enough.

Think seriously about Serial ATA drives. The prices are starting to be
competitive with EIDE drives.

YMMV, not valid in Vermont, if you lined all the geeks up end to end,
we'd point in all directions....

Interesting. I've held off for the moment- interesting what you say
about the prescotts.

I'll probably go a 3.0GHZ northwood.... now in terms of motherboard
chipsets, what are the main differences between 845PE, 865PE and
antything 875 ?

What would you recommend ? Budget is still a factor here, as i am now
spending a few hundred more on the cpu than I planned....

thanks for the input btw
