Default Data Recovery Help needed!!!

Hi all,
Please no comments regarding backing up data after reading this post...I
always give my clients the option of buying a 2nd hard drive, but many don't
want to pony up the money for backup.
Well, Hell has frozen over and a hard drive has gone whacky in some way that
I do not understand. And, of course, this had to happen to a client's work
with no backup (thank you Murphy).
Here's what has happened: Approximately thirty songs worth of material had
been recorded on Mackie HDR 24/96 onto a Maxtor 30GB drive prior to last
night. When I booted up the HDR last evening, all of the files were present
in the HDR Projects folder. I then created seven new songs (ctrl-N) and
saved them to the HDR Projects folder in my usual fashion. I then recorded
the seven tunes and upon looking back in the HDR Projects folder, the only
files present were the new ones recorded just recorded--all of the old files
were apparently gone. At this point my angst was about as high as
imaginable.
I say "apparently", because upon coming home and sticking the Hard Drive in
my Win2000 PC, things are not as they seem.
I hit Windows Explorer and looked in the drive's contents; it showed the
seven songs I recorded last night (total of 553MB) in the HDR Projects
folder and two other files of "unknown type", one about 5GB and one about
0.5GB, outside of the HDR Projects folder.
When I right-click on the drive and select "properties", it shows that there
is 17GB of files and 13GB of free space-??? This makes no sense at all. It
seems that all of my prior recording files are still there, but somehow made
"invisible" and not accessible.
-Has this ever happened to anyone before?
-Does Mackie offer a Data Recovery Service?
-Can anyone recommend a Data Recovery Service that could help me out of this
pickle? Am I correct in assuming that Mackie has a proprietary file system?
I need to let my client know ASAP, so both of us can get some sleep.
Any advice will be immensely appreciated.
Praying,
Alan
