Default The Art of Bose Bashing and Amar's Supposed Descent into Mediocrity

I guess from the beginning of time itself humanity has shown its
strengths and weaknesses sometimes with very little subtlety. Certainly
we are a breed of beings quite capable of love, compassion, honesty,
integrity, good-hearted humor, good will, bravery and self sacrifice.
Unfortunately this very same breed is quite comfortable at times with
hatred, greed, lying, sarcasm, snobbishness, cheating, ignorance,
prejudice, cowardice and selfishness.

proud trademarks of the lowly common Bose basher.

Peter,
Your thinking has not caught up with the times. Back in 1968, the Bose
901 provided an ad-hoc form of surround sound, which was a craved-after
novelty at the time. But by 1987, electronic methods of emulating the room
acoustics of performance venues became widespread, obsoleting the crudities
of using room reflections in a room which has no relationship to the
recording space.

Loudspeakers made by everybody else became far better as well. The 901's
used cones for treble frequencies; so did everybody else. Now everybody else
use high frequency drivers that far outperform the cones of the 901.

Bose has become infamous for accumlating obstructive patents, exploiting
the weakness of the U.S. Patent Office in examining for prior art. This, and
their hunger for lawsuits, which you have mentioned, has given Bose a
deserved reputation for a nasty corporate personality.

You have every right to savour and enjoy your Bose 901's. Technically,
they are junk, and you are expressing misplaced feelings of love and
devotion for a money-grubbing corporation that would be better directed
toward other human beings, ie., wife, children, family, relations, and
people you admire.

You should force yourself to take the 901's to a consignment shop. They
will not get you what you think they are worth, but it will be the first
step toward personal renewal. Like many other people, you are prisoner of an
idea. You owe it to yourself to bust out of that prison. The world of audio
engineering has advanced many times since you last fell in love, and you
deserve your freedom.

'Surround sound' from a stereo signal using the out of phase component to
feed rear speakers was already understood well before then.

True, and I have played with the Hafler matrix.

However, the effect is not really any more accurate than the Bose technique
of bouncing sound around the listening room. Both are properly part of
antiquity.

The difference with the Bose technique of bouncing things round the room
is that it can't be turned off - and makes a right mess of the soundstage.
Anyone taken in by that sound truly had no idea what they were missing.

Anti-Bose arguments basically revolve around two flawed arguments.

NO SPEAKER sounds anything like "live" or "real" music. The art of audio
REPRODUCTION isn't anywhere close to being able to reconstruct reality.
Therefore, one should just go with what sounds best to them - and in this, Bose
speakers are no better or worse than anything else, cheaper or FAR more
expensive.

Bose speakers are said to be "cheap". However, they have (according the the
BBB) the lowest complaint rate of ANY audio company. And they offer a
five-year warranty. So clearly they stand behind their products, regardless of
what anyone says.

And attacks on the 901 of "comb filtering" or other defects are great in
theory, but NO ONE has ever documented a double blind test where anyone could
hear these artifacts. They do look impressive on a scope, though!
