Default Subwoofer comments?

Okay newbie here... this is the first of probably many posts I'll
have. I'm planning on adding one or more subs to my car and am just
trying to nail down what I should go with. So, here's some speakers
I've been looking at and have heard some good things about:

1. Image Dynamics IDMAX12 12"
2. MTX Audio Thunder9500 12"
3. Kicker Solo-Baric L7 12"

I'm not really concerned about price here. What I'm looking for is
sound quality most importantly, with power/kick/whatever-you-call-it
being a close second priority. Of course reliability should be good as
well.

If someone could provide comments on any or all of the above subs or
if there are better ones which I failed to mention please comment on
those as well. Also if anyone can provide information on different
types of enclosures that would be great.

I listen to a variety of music, mostly metal (progressive) but also
jazz and some rock, hip-hop, and techno.

Thanks!

I haven't heard the MTX so I can't comment on that but I have owned and sold
both the L7's and the IDMAX. I by far prefer the IDMAX to the L7 but the
L7 did sound like it was a lot more midbassy where the IDMAX sounded
correct. My wife has an L5 and I have an IDMAX and we both prefer it. For
you I would suggest an IDMAX in a ported box tuned to 33Hz. Tons of low end
and it will get stupid loud while still sounding squeaky clean.

Cool finally another prog rocker in this group!!

The only one of those Ive heard is the L7 and it was loud as hell. It was
in about 4 cubic feet and the guy said the port was tuned to 34Hz.
I cant comment on the other 2.

If price is no obj IMHO you should also consider
Adire** (DPL 12 and tempest are my personal fav's)
DD
RE
Dayton- parts express house brand
Blueprint- out of business, limited availability
Powerbase- extreme series, their budget lines are overpriced IMHO.

Parts express has a great deal on these Koves:

I think TC sounds is the build house for these (????)

Whichever you choose make sure your enclosure design is optimum for the TS
parameters.

Well if you want sound quality you have to check out 'Elemental Designs'
(http://www.edesignaudio.com/). They have a very nice range of
subwoofers. 'Treo Engineering' (http://www.treoonline.com/) also have
some very nice subs. If we how much space and how many watts you want
we could help you narrow it down a bit.

Thanks to everyone for their responses so far. I'll be adding some of
the new suggestions to my list and continue gathering opinions.

Well I figured I would add some more info. I want to put this/these in
my '93 Civic. I'm not too concerned about weight because I don't
really care how fast my car is... it's a cheap-ass civic. I just want
good sound! I'll be upgrading everything sound-related but am
focusing on the sub for this thread. As I said before, sound quality
is very important to me but I don't want to completely ignore SPL
either. I want a sub that will sound beautiful at reasonable volumes
but when I turn it up I want it to pound the **** out of me at those
low frequencies. I have a hard enough time hearing lower frequencies
anyways so I at least need to "feel" them. Something that can handle
1000 watts would be sweet.

From what I've gathered so far, looks like the L7 is best for SPL but
perhaps lacks SQ. Heard good things about the IDMAX but really no
opinions on the MTX so maybe I'll just drop the MTX from my list. Kurt
suggested Elemental Designs and Treo Engineering as good companies to
look at. Anyone have opinions on them? Also Garrett suggestion Adire,
among others, so if anyone know much about them (web site?) please
speak up.

Thanks!

Search the termpro.com audio forum for all the brands mentioned above. Lots
of DB drag fellas lurk there as well as SQ nuts, some are sponsored
competitors so generally they know what works. Every now and then someone
will post a "Help, spider/voicecoil came unglued" type of thread.

Here are some URLs to get you started.

Just to reply to myself again ... if anyone has heard anything *BAD*
about any of the subs mentioned hear please make yourself heard.
Hearing the bad qualities is probably more important than hearing the
good qualities (since it's a human tendency to "forget" anything bad
about your favorite gear).
