Interesting that the Kinks' Waterloo Sunset is higher than You Really
Got Me, arguably the more influential record. My favorite Bowie song is
his top-rated.

If I made this list, I'd have a time limit that includes "Like a Rolling
Stone" and "Stairway to Heaven" but eliminates "Hey Jude".

Er, isn't Stairway to Heaven longer than Hey Jude?

I could live with losing "Stairway". Perhaps a discontinuous limit...

So could I. On my drive back from work I would hear it at least one on 93.7
and 102.3, I don't remember which one of them was Austin's Rock.

Now that I am living in San Francisco, I have mercifully been spared (I am
using the bus). However, the local "classic rock" station also plays the
usual dreck.

Hey Jude, on the other hand, is an absolute classic. Possibly my third
favorite Beatles song, after Tomorrow Never Knows and Love To You.

102.3 has changed format: no more hideous morning zoo! No more djays,
either, "intelligent" programming with comparisons to Ipods.

Clear Channel is everywhere

So classic that I don't want to hear it very often. The last time I
heard the song was the Bing Crosby version.

Yes indeed. Replace it with Feelings, or I Think I Can Fly.

The first is quite a song, in the original Spanish.

Whiter Shade of Pale is only no 67.
I have seen several lists ranking it No 1 or 2

another comment:
not surprising that 8 of top 9, 11 of top 14, and 14 of top 20
were between 1963 and 1971

Yes, Rolling Stone is a magazine for a nostalgic population aged around
50-60 years old. ;-)

I would love to hear GeoGag singing "Mr Tambourine Man" or "California
Dreamin'"... And ScottW "Born to be wild".

NO FUTURE !!!!

Glen Campbell may be the "Wichita Lineman"
but poor Lionel is the "Paris Sewerman" ...

where he bellows at the top of his lungs:

"When there's no future how can there be sin
"We're the flowers in the dustbin

I'd certainly rank that song in the top 20, if not the top 10.

No, not for me. At least during most weeks. It would have to crowd out
Joe Le Taxi, and we can't have *that*.

I look through the first 100 songs and I was expecting to see at least
one or two songs from CCR, Pink Floyd, and Everly Bros. higher up
into the first 50 songs. As it is base on rank, CCR comes in at #99,
Ever. Bros. at #141, PF at #314. I understand that among the criteria
includes industry figures.

Alright, so how 'bout a top 5 list?

Off the top of my head, I'd come up with:

1. Procol Harum "Conquistador"
2. Pink Floyd "One Of These Days"
3. Led Zeppelin "Misty Mountain Hop"
4. The Clash "London Calling"
5. The Faces "Stay With Me"

5 out of the first 100, it would be:

1. All Along the Watch Tower
2. Crazy (Cline)
3. Like a Rolling Stone
4. When Doves Cry
5. God Only Knows

Any such list is hopelessly arbitrary (not to mention subjective). At one point
they call it the "Top" 500 songs. At another point they call it the "Greatest"
500 songs. At another point they call it "Favorite" 500 songs. Whatever.

Note, they never called it the 'best' 500 songs.

Old news and currently irrelevant just like the magazine.

Yes, Jann Wenner and his crew were completely impartial. Not only is
the presence of the magazine's title in the title of the first song
and the second song's artist a complete coincidence, but Mr.Wenner is
the song arbiter of all time. He has proven that not only is Mr.
Robert Allan Zimmerman the greatest songsmith to have ever lived, but
that old saps like Cole Porter, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Cahn, Van
Heusen, the whole bunch, were nobodies whose lives were spent in vain.
The 500 songs selected by Wenner and co. are the five hundred greatest
songs ever written anywhere anytime or which may ever be written.

Agreed. It's a very tired looking US-centric MoR poll.

Pistols are No.53 on the list.

What is the title of the song that goes (and I'm not making this up) "
duh.....duh......duh, ...........duh......duh........duh" That is the
background vocal along with instrtumentation, but it's very prominent in the
song.

I'd like to get a copy of it to play whenever I see one of Mikey's posts.

Canada's Crash Test Dummies.

It's actually called "MMM, MMM, MMM, MMM".

So, you *were* making this up g.

It's from the album, "God Shuffled His Feet", an album that had a
title track that Julia Sweeney used as the theme song for her totally
FINE one woman show based on her brother's death from cancer and her
subsequent bout with ovarian cancer. Highly recommended. I love her
and want to marry her. But she'll have to move to Nashville, which I
don't think is going to happen.

I'm not sure of the title - perhaps this is the same song - but the one I've
heard numerous times on TV and/or radio, DEFINITELY has the words "dah, dah,
dah" (repeated several times). Maybe there's another song with this lyric?

From the VW ad?

That's the one! It's interesting that it's described as a song about nothing.
That fits perfectly with McKelvy's posts - they are about nothing also.

Da,, da, da sound a lot like duh, duh, duh and in either case, is much more
sensible and truthful than anything McKelvy has to say.

Thanks for the "research".
