Default Question about Volume?

I have a PC soundcard going into an amp/receiver (coax digital out from the
PC) how do I adjust the volume for optimal sound? Since the PC and the
receiver each have their own volume control?

Similarly, if I have a powered sub (with it's own volume control) and the
receiver has a volume control for the subwoofer, how do I balance the
volumes for the best quality sound? Do I turn the volume all the way up on
the sub itself and just use the volume control on the receiver or
vice-versa, or some combination of both? I've always wondered about this.
Could anyone shed some light on this topic?

Thanks,
B

Thanks, that makes sense. Any opinions on the subwoofer issue (which is
obviously analogue)?

Set the soundcard to maximum volume if you are outputting digitally...

Start out with control at about 2 o'clock, and adjust equally in order to
have desired maximum volume.

The sound card probably has two volume controls all by itself, one for wave
output (i.e., not MIDI or CD or Line In) and one master volume control. Same
basic idea follows - have both set proportionately the same and adjust
together for maximum desired output. Use the volume control on the receiver
for your main systemcontrol.

Same basic idea.

Split the difference.

I've always wondered about this. Could anyone shed some light on this
topic?

One gets a snout full of this kind of thing doing live sound. If you try to
keep all controls at similar proportional settings, the system is just
easier to manage.
