Default Sennheiser HD650's: first impressions

They arrived, and am listening to them now... (currently playing: Chet
Baker, album: It could happen to you, song: I'm old fashioned)

The very first thought that popped in my mind when I slipped these one was
simple: they are real similar, very close, to my HD580's.

It took some more listening to realize the power of subtlety. The piano has
a certain liveliness to it, as if dancing, and the vocals, very rich. The
bass is more clear, less distorted and flabby. It sounds as if certain
frequencies are filtered slightly for an overall politeness to the sound,
and also there is none of the sharpness that the HD580 had. It is on the
bright side overall. As for comfort, they are about equally as comfortable,
the 580's are actually quite a bit lighter being made out of plastic. The
650's really shine on the Luxman tube amp/Panasonic cd player combo,
bringing out the finer details in the sound. Right now I'm listening to them
on my portable iRiver imp-350 with a cmoy amp and there is a huge
difference. The Luxman is much better. Anyway, going to get back to
listening now...

Yep, the difference as I recall was immediately noticeable to the highs.
I definitely think it was worth the extra cost but, HD580 was something
I could live with at the time.
