Default Noise Reduction in Real Time

I am using Sound Forge 7 and Noise Redux 2 from Sony to clean up LP. It
works fairly well. But I want more...
I want to use this filter in real time so I don't have to record the LP
first. There is no way to do this with SF or with Nero or with Sony EZ Audio
Restore. I was hoping somebody would know of an application that does this
like the old cedar system did. It would be a computerized SAE or KLH
equivalent...
Any ideas?

This is one of the real killers for people who are still holding onto their
outdated realtime CD recorders. The available signal processing is extremely
limited, not to mention very costly.

Or Audition or any of the other common tools people use to transcribe LPs.

A parametric equalizer

A graphic equalizer

A dynamics processor (especially the noise gate facility that these have).

I have all my outdated equipment I see no need to toss it just yet. besides
it makes bit perfect legal copies of audio CD's and DAT tape which I use for
live recording now. I agree that the signal processing can be costly.

I read the piece but the author says he couldn't implement the system he
described. It also only deals with hiss not clicks and pops.

http://www.audiotools.com/noise.html (under single-ended noise reduction)

All of these analog systems are well known. I own the dbx and the SAE and
they are quite incomplete when compared to what SF can do.

A parametric equalizer

A graphic equalizer

Equalizer changes the music content and is not suitable as a noise reduction
unit.

A dynamics processor (especially the noise gate facility that these have).

I have both a dbx and a behringer but they only reduce noise when there is
no signal present. They also over-react to pops and make the noise worse not
better.
I have a Burwen 1201A which is a much more sophisticated noise gate but
again it does nothing about pops and clicks and does not do anything to the
noise signature when high frequency music is processed. It pumps just like
any other noise gate.

Actually, I am working on a method to use the Sound Forge NR2 plug in as a
real time processor. I found a Application that can do this I think. I will
let you know.

Steinbergs Declick and Denoise plugins (and SF NR plug) work well in
realtime if you don't aim too high. I used this combination a while
back with a 20bit A/D soundcard, outputting the results to minidisc
via SP/DIF. Got through a few hundred records this way, taking a
couple of minutes at the start of each record to take noise prints,
optimizing settings and levels in Live Monitor mode. Then it was just
a case of cueing and recording the throughput. The results were very
good.

I hope those plugins had nothing to do with Gene Steinberg (aka Steinborg aka
Steindrone). As far as RAO was concerned, he got declicked and denoised a long
time ago .

I don't know. The author could be any one of numerous people that DM has lied
about, defamed, and libeled during his 7 year history of verbal abuse and
pathological lying on RAO.

As usual, McKelvy is stupidly wrong and lying to promote his hatemongering
agenda.

His blatant hypocrisy re. insults is also noted. for the following reasons:

(1) He failed to note the smiley emoticon at the end of the comments re.
Steinberg.
While he claims to engage in "satire" and "humor" while ridiculing others to
rationalize some of his personal attacks, he hypocritically mislabels humor
clearly indicated by a smiley emoticon as an attack. Just typical of his
double standard based hypocrisy and deceptive posting.

(2) The Google record *does* indicate that some RAO posters referred to Gene
Steinberg as either Steinborg or Steindrone. McKelvy has a documented history
of perverting peoples' names and making new ones for them that are much more
insulting. Therefore, his complaint here simply reveals hyporcrisy.

(3) McKelvy once again tries to lie about "professional behavior" on RAO.
Since RAO is an audio hobbyist forum, and not any type of professional
activity, his nonsensical complaints re. professional behavior are both
inappropriate and irrelevant.

(4) The Google record will also indicate that while Gene Steinberg and I had
some differences of opinion, resulting in Steinberg comitting some pretty
blatant falsehoods re. me., our differences were successfully resolved. Mr.
Steinberg discussed our differences privately via private email and telephone.
As a result, Gene published a retraction in RAO of any and all things he had
said about my professional identity, activities. etc. Mr. Steinberg,
therefore, did the honorable thing and publicly acknowledged that his
defamatory statements were false. He did this on RAO.

(5) Unlike Mr. Steinberg, McKelvy does not have the integrity or honesty to
find out the facts, and continues to engage in a series of lies about this
writer on an almost daily basis.

(6) The humorous comments about Mr. Steinberg being "denoised and declicked'
was simply a play on words taken directly from Paul Dormer's original comments
about a fellow named Steinberg. Gene Steinberg *did* decide to stop posting in
RAO, presumably in response to many posts that criticized him.

Very well stated. Gene Steinberg's primary occupation was as a writer for
various computer magazines.

Nor do I, but I don't see it here. Us "normals"
aran't exactly a buch of rich fat cats. We don't
have $15,000 amplifiers, $25,000 speakers,
$10,000 cd transport/DACs. The most anyone
might brag on here is a pair of $5,000 Quads.

My most expensive audio item is a used pair of
Vandersteen 4's that cost $1,900.

Agreed. Their arrogance and presumptuousness in trying to impose their
quasi-religious audio beliefs on others is reminiscent of the propaganda and
lack of tolerance for others described in novels like "1984". They should mind
their own business.

Yes indeed, that is a repulsive attitude, but it's not an "objectivist"
one. It's a 'borg one.

Yes, I do understand the distinction.
