IIRC, my brother-in-law had one of these in the system I configured

What do you mean quirky.

Microprocessor control. Limits hands-on set up and leaves you at
the mercy of the circuitry.

Also, there is the fact that most older direct drive turntables may present
some significant S/N issues conmpared to most modern belt-drive turntables.
(Given the probable location of the motor and possible motor/cartridge
interactions).
