Default bass response sounded better at circuit city

just posted about these speakers the other day bout temperature.
anyway... they're infinity primus 150's... and I'm sure the bass
response sounded better at circuit city. I asked the guy at least
twice if they were definately playing alone without a sub or
anything... and the only subs would have been behind me, and it didn't
sound like any bass was coming from behind me. okay, so I've got a
6.1 surround KLH receiver. and it's set just to be playing through
the only 2 speakers I've got--it's not set to think I've got a sub or
surround speakers. anyway, when I changed in the setup the
speakers from Large to Small, the bass response was better, but the
clarity seemed better when they were set to Large. anyway, this is
all confusing... can anyone help me? guess I'm just going to end up
having to buy a sub.

Bass from a subwoofer is non-directional, so you can't tell where it is
coming from. Go ahead and get a sub-woofer, preferably one from Infinity
that is designed to work with speakers you have.

Bass response is very dependent on the room and the location in the room,
so it is not surprising that the bass sounds different in your room than
in the showroom. When you change the speaker size in your reciever's settings
it adjusts the amount of bass sent to the speaker. This is so as not to waste
power unecessarily and not risk damaging your speakers. When you set the
speakers to small, the bass cutoff is higher. This helps because no power
is wasted trying to reproduce sounds your speakers can't. At the same time,
some of the low bass is now missing. That is where your subwoofer, if you
had one, would come in.

Several possibilities here.

1) The guy at CC could have been lying. You generally won't be able to
tell where a subwoofer is from the sound.
2) Speaker positioning. Move your speakers around and see how they
change.
3) Weird surround/'enhanced' settings on either your receiver, or the
one in the store. All auditioning of stuff should be done with the
tone controls and the DSP turned OFF!

Those are the most likely causes that I can think of.

What others have posted is right but it could also be that your KLH receiver
is not powerful enough to produce full range sound through your speakers. A
lot of receivers, even some expensive ones, skimp on the output stages of
the amplifiers. But I agree with the other posts, get a powered sub. It
will take a big load off of your receiver and should give you the bass that
you want.

Sprocket,

Either the salesman was lying about no sub playing, or the store showroom is
a lot larger than your living room and so has fewer acoustic problems at the
low end.
