track counts on DAWs on current laptops
What sort of straight recording (no plug ins, stereo monitor mix)
track count @ 24 bit/48k could I expect with a current G4 IBook and DP4 or PT 6? With a P4 1.8 Gig PC laptop? (PT6 or Audition or Samp.) How does one determine this, other than trying it? Is this not enough info to get a real answer? thanks Philip Perkins |

trying it? Is this not enough info to get a real answer? It's no info at all. You need the harddisk throughput rate, that is the limiting factor. 24/48 = 144kB/s. Harddisk throughput is usually around 20MB/s, good for about 100 channels. There may be other limiting factors, but CPU, memory, interface (e.g. firewire or USB2) aren't the limiting factor. Mike. |

I think a factor is whether the hardware you use to record with has its own dsp for monitoring input signals. Other wise you would be doing it via software and that would put a big lag on the system. If we were to believe this former poster, you should be able to get a 100 tracks from a hard disc. I don't think so. The more fragmented a hard disc is the harder it will have to work to write new data. You will essentially need an external hard disc with a laptop. The ones that laptops come with are often lower rotation speeds because they need to conserve power since laptops have heat problems and need to run off batteries as well. I would assume with the right hardware and an external disc you could record 24 simultaneously at 24/44. Things you have to look out for is configuring your system to not run stuff in the background that can cause a sudden unknown hit on the system and to defrag the recording drive periodically. Get as much ram as you can and firewire is generally considered better than USB for the external drive. Mike http://www.mmeproductions.com |

Assume 96Kbytes for 48Khz 16 bit. 100 Tracks is 9.6 megabytes per second. Go 24 bits and it's 14.4 megabytes/second. --Neil |
