Default recording with M-Audio transit

I was wondering if someone could please helo me. I recently get
M-Audio Transit USB, since my laptop doesn't come with a line-in, but
I can't get any recording program (I use cool edit pro and total
recorder) to record through Transit. I've played around with all the
settings, but no matter what I do, it seems like there is no data
going through Transit and it records nothing. I am at a complete loss.
Can anyone please offer any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

If you are using Windows (not mentioned in the post), you need to go to the
Control Panel, double click "Sounds and Audio Devices", choose the "Audio"
tab, and change the default device for Sound Playback and Audio Recording to
the Transit.

.... and then you will gain over 40dB s/n and have a smoother sound.
However I find it then shows up the noise (buzzzzz) from the laptop power
supply, so can only use it on battery. No, nothing to do with ground-loops.
