Default Help with Mac Audio Output

I'm using a G5 and running Panther.

I plugged an old reel to reel (mono)
into my Mac audio-line-in in an attempt
to digitize some stuff. I have two
EV Sonic speakers hooked up from the
audio line out. Should I be able to
hear the tape playing through the
speakers? I can't. I checked sound
in the system prefs and I can see
that there's sound coming in but
I'm not getting any output with
the speakers or headphone or even
the little internal speaker (when I
unplug the EV's). The mute button
is unchecked. Is there some "play
through' setting that I'm missing
or doesn't it work this way?

thanks for your help,

John
