What's happened to this newsgroup?
It used to be r.a.p., rec.audio.pro. It's still r.a.p., but it now
seems to stand for redc.audio.politics. Most of the postings have nothing to do with audio. Norm Strong |

There's a serious polarization in this country, and on the internet. |

Norm Strong Hi Norm, While I'm not going to take the time to count and compare, just taking a quick glance it seems that a strong majority ( like over 90% ) of the 'initial' posts have to do with music/recording. Unfortunately, the political threads tend to become huge while audio threads tend to average around 15 posts. And even worse is when audio threads turn into huge political threads. John L Rice |

seems to stand for redc.audio.politics. Most of the postings have nothing to do with audio. Actually most of the posts are directly related to audio. Go back and check again. I work at a recording/post studio and the discussions we have in our spare time have a much worse audioolitics ratio than this group. It's when people *stop* discussing politics that I'll be really concerned. Audio matters, but it doesn't start wars or otherwise make the planet a ****tier place to live, autotune excepted. Norm Strong My newsreader shows approximately two political threads, and a whole bunch of threads of the "stop talking about..." variety. If it weren't for the latter, I'd pretty much forget the former existed. |

"most" would be an over-eggageration. i think the human mind tends
towards hyperbole, to satisfy the mental-drama queen in our heads. if you do a quick title search on today's posts, for example, you'll see it's far less than 50%. Yes I agree. I think a lot of people are also frequenting other forums.
The format works better at others as far as there are different topics. Ones for non audio posts etc. I think the competely non audio talk should get directed somewhere else. I think it has slowed the traffic here a little. I still like RAP the best though. I just want to see audio and music posts. Todd F. As long as a thread is titled so that I can tell what it's really about, it's not going to waste my time or bandwidth without my consent. I have strong political views which are morally important to me, and _precisely for that reason_ I make it a point to ignore political threads most of the time. Verbal sparring seems to invigorate some people's commitment to viewpoints that are really just props to allow all the arguing and posturing to go on like an endless, meaningless game. The one thing which never happens as a result of playing that game is that anyone ever grasps the reality of what they're supposedly talking about. Some people's combativeness may be the primary energy source in their emotional life. I know that from my own experience as a younger person. Decades ago I was on (one political extreme) for several years before becoming active on (the other side), and it was all about evading the enemy in every conversation--imaginary verbal martial arts tournaments with oneself as the sole judge of every event. I can remember all the defenses; I could not be bothered by mere facts; no one could tell me _anything_ that I didn't want to hear. Nowadays I try not to step into that arena. Once I understand that someone has a dependency on phony righteousness as the mainspring of their miserable existence, I can hardly begrudge them for it--but fortunately I'm not obliged to stimulate and feed it for them, nor to volunteer as a target for them to throw their monkey droppings at me, which I know full well will be forthcoming. What won me over to (the other side) was that the people there were so much more pleasant, well-informed and interesting to be with. So I've tried to get as much of that to rub off onto me as possible. The rubbing part can be rather pleasant, I've found. Well, plus this past year I've been studying one of the actual martial arts fairly seriously. It takes way more effort and patience--but is also much more gratifying--than anything I had going back when verbal sparring was my "life." (I was just promoted to yellow belt this past Thursday, and have been semi-euphoric even though that is lowest level of non-absolute-beginner belt. But after wanting to learn this for 40+ years, it feels mighty good indeed to find out that I really can.) |
