Same mic as in the top right picture. I think it's an Electro-Voice
because of the cut out on the side.

Is that Willie Dixon behind Muddy, on bass?

The mic is an EV 666. It's actually in the stand with
what is normally the up side facing down. You can see
that little bump which is the circular port.

That is indeed Willie Dixon on bass.

Could it be the front end of an EV666? It looks like the old Chess studios.
That's Willie Dixon playing bass.

Definitely an EV 666.

They sound great on some voices.

An old radio and tv standby.

??, I know who it is, there are many muddy water cuts that dont sound
like this. Im generally impressed by the chess mid 60's sound (the
kenny burell stuff is outstanding!)

just curious as to any info I can get on what they used to capture the
sound of muddy waters playing.

thanks

I don't have any graphics here, but from the rest of this thread, I assume
that you are talking about the cover of the old Muddy Waters Folk Singer LP
on Chess. If so, the mike on the cover was a 666, which was sort of the
mike you used when you didn't have the money for anything really good, but
had more than the 664. It was a nice little dynamic. It's still a handy
mike to have around since it's a dynamic without a big presence peak.

I always remembered the Chess stuff in that era as sounding pretty crude.
A lot of their early stuff seemed to have been done on non-feedback cutters,
even. If it sounds good, it's probably mostly because Muddy Waters was
so good in the first place.

A friend of mine was doing some research for a book he was writing on
Little Walter, and during an interview with Malcolm Chisholm(who was a
poster to this newgroup till the idiots ran him off and he has since
passed on) one of the Chess engineers. Malcolm told him that his first
job at Universal Studios was to make direct boxes using large UTC
transformers which they would alligator clip to the speaker leads.
Apparently they DI'd all the guitars and harmonicas. The ambience from
the amps would also be picked up in the vocal mic's and drum mics
somewhat leaving a very clean but natural sound. Most of the better
sounding Chess records stuff was actually recorded at Universal, not
Chess, it took the Chess studio's quite a bit of time to get it together
and get a decent sound.

BTW-Muddy would have sounded like that through any mic, he had that
sound even when I would just be talking to him.

The graphic shows the "Original Master Recordings" remaster of the disc, from
the original tapes. Beat the pants off the original Chess pressings.
