Default another compression question: LA2 vs. virtual LA2

sorry...
anyone here lucky enough to have used both a pro-tools LA2/1176A plugins and
the real deal (universal audio), or the joe meek gear?

If so, how similar is the sound?

What I am pondering is if the cost vs. quality question.

I would rather get a single high quality outboard piece and deal with the
inconvenience of printing every compressor (and being stuck with one kind),
using my current daw (which doesn't have tdm's flexibility), than have a
mountain of flexibility with a TDM system and the plugins, if the quality of
the plugins doesn't stand up.

My man is in Italy, in like a multi-cazillion dollar studio with joe meek's
compressors, avalons and [u name it] and he is constantly raving about the
quality of the outboard compression of the meeks and universal stuff, so I
figure it is time to get that part of our system into semi good shape.

Since the meeks and ua's are also available in software form via UAD1 and
TDM (or similar systems) I would rather have that flexibility if the results
don't suffer noticably, or at the risk of sounding trailer park, doesn't
rock as much. If the punch, feel and response of the TDM can't match the
real thing... if not in character(probably impossible), at least in quality,
it isn't worth it.
