I'm reminded of the phrase uttered by Martin Short in the fine (and
underrated) movie THE BIG PICTU "I don't know you, and I don't know your work, but I do know that you're very, very talented." That one's good enough to hang on the wall. (Co-written by Michael McKean and Christopher Guest, later of SPINAL TAP and THE FOLKSMEN.) --MFW |

I was doing a session for a producer who after a take said through
the TB: "You're playing exactly what I'm hearing" And also from "Tap" Fred Willard blathering to the band- "We're big fans of your music. Not your band particularly, but the whole genre". |

If we have an excellent take and we know it, we can often get a better one just because the one in the can lets us relax completely about getting what we need. I don't think this comment was meaningless but I loved it.

And it's just as good of a production technique to be running prior to the
group's knowledge that you're running. A 10 piece latin/cuban band was in and after about an hour of futzing around the leader had them run through a couple of quick passages that they were meaning to use for one minute demos. They all came out fine. Then he told them they weren't recording yet, and I walked in and said "Oh yes you are". They never hit anything else well the rest of the night. So I guess my most meaningless compliment was "Remember when I told you to be practiced and ready before coming into the studio? Well, it looks like you tried really hard." But in general I agree. Knowing you have a well played piece down does free up most musicians to be less concerned about the process of recording, and more concerned about the process of making music. -- Roger W.
