![]() Hi folks- I'm shopping for a small-format digital mixer for my project studio. It's one room---I record in the room with the mixer. The computer is by the door to my shop, so it gets put "outside" during a session, but not the mixer/transport, obviously. I've had a Roland mixer, and though it is impressive in some respects, the fan is loud enough that it can't be in the same room as the mics for acoustic guitar recording. One model that's attractive to me is the Tascam DM-24, in part because it has *no* fan. But it's physically larger than I'd like, and has more channels than I really need (12 or even 8 would suffice), so I'm also looking at the Yamaha 01V96. Does it have a fan? If so, how quiet is it? Any other suggestions for this application? Thanks, Tom Loredo -- To respond by email, replace "somewhere" with "astro" in the return address. |

But it's physically larger than I'd like That's a pretty tiny mixer. If you don't have room for that, you probably should consider moving a few walls. I'm trying to do multiple duties---I want to be able to use the mixer with a hard disk recorder, but also as a control surface for Logic 6 on a Mac G4. So I'd like to have it on a locator stand for tracking and be able to "snuggle up" to the computer when I'm mixing. I have an analog mixer (MixWizard 14:4:2) and am also hoping to find something that could work for my occassional live gigs, in which case I can get rid of the MixWizard (raise $$). So rack-width would be ideal, though there is room on my computer workstation to just barely squeeze on the DM-24. The fan can be a make-or-break issue, so if any 01V96 owners can address that, I'd appreciate. Any other comparisons between these mixers (converter quality, usability as control surface, etc.) would also be appreciated. Peace, Tom -- To email replace "somewhere" with "astro". |

Tom,
If you really need a TINY yet capable mixer - great convertors, pres, DAW controller, extremely flexible routing, extra channels for 2005 and beyond in an extremely compact format - check out the Yamaha DM1000. It is the rack-width baby bro to the O2R96 and DM2000. No fan / big heatsink! Bad news: You might have to pawn the SUV. Dale Oddio Guy |
