Default need help w/ mixer to laptop (sound not clear)

Hey all,

I'm new to all this and trying to put together an internet radio
setup. My problem is that I don't know if it's working correctly. I
practically have to eat the mic to hear myself clearly and if I really
eat it (1" away, it just sounds bad). The meter needles on the mixer
don't move much when I speak but the sound effect buttons sure come
through clearly which makes me sort of think the mixer is fine but the
mic isn't.

I have the following equipment.

Powerbook G4
RadioShack SSM-1750
AKG 300 Mic
Phantom Power Adaptor

And it's put together like this ...

1) I have an AKG 300 mic plugged into the input of a Rolls phantom
power adaptor (PB23).
2) The adapter is switched to 48 volts.
3) The output of the Phantom power adapter plugs into the DJ mic (XLR
port) of the SSM-1750 Mixer.
4) I have a Y adapter stereo wires from the Amp Output on back of the
SSM-1750 that lead into a 1/8" stereo input on the laptop where I plan
to record.

Any ideas or help much appreciated.
