Hi can anyone recommend a cheap (eg shareware/freeware or PD) piece of
Windows audio SW that will record common sound formats and do basic
editing, mebbe a few filters built in? Am aware the 'doze has a built
in recorder but want something just a 'little' further on than that.

Just need to record and enrich some spoken word. Needs to be simple to
operate.

Take a look at:

(1) Goldwave - downloadable shareware
(2) The simple Audio editors that come with CDEX and EAC which are
downloadable freeware.
(3) Audacity - a simple, competetent, freeware, open source editor.

Google will route you to download sites quickly and easily.

All of these products will record 16/44 stereo .wav files and do limited
editing, which is what you
need to burn audio CDs with.
