Hello,
I think someone was asking about this recently but there was no clear answer.I,d like to add a sub to extend the range of the A10's, so something with a built in crossover would be good- I can spend up to $400.Thanks for any ideas and thanks to Scott Dorsey for recomending the A10's as they're a big improvement of the event 20/20's I used to use. What is wrong with the NHT sub that they sell specifically for the A10s? --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your reply. The B20's are out of my price range(they are about $1700) and I would like more low end extension than offered by the S00.If I went with the consumer line sw12 or sw10ii, what would be the best way to crossover? Would it be good enough to set the low pass on the sub to around 50hz(around where the A10 naturally rolls off)or should I really get a sub that filters the signal before reaching the A10's? I can spend about $500-perhaps you know agood place to look for NHT stuff used. Thanks a lot for your insight and thanks again for the original reccomendation to these-I'm really enjoying working with them. You should never rely on the low-end corner of the driver itself; you absolutely have to have a high-pass network that is predictable on the mains. Most of the external crossovers out there that are any good are going to cost more than your whole budget. I can spend about $500-perhaps you know agood place to look for NHT stuff used. Thanks a lot for your insight and thanks again for the original reccomendation to these-I'm really enjoying working with them. Check around.... and check on Ebay. Or consider buying a crossover now, and then an amp later, and then a passive sub like the Hsu Research box later on. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

I've been using a Rane MX-22 and or a DBX 223 24/dB crossover which allows me to set crossover points to any frequency. The subwoofer addresses the limitations of the A-10's at high listening levels and below 140 Hz. I find that the A10's have a lot more dynamic range if crossed over from as low a 80 Hz to as high as 130 Hz (24 dB/octave). A 130 Hz crossover means that the sub and the A10s have to be pretty close together. I use the sub for a foot rest, if you catch my drift. It also will literally flap the listener's pants legs on some recordings. |

Hi again,
Thanks a lot to both of you for the advice. Arny, do you have a preference between the Rane and the dbx?Scott, I went to the HSU site and their stuff looks great! They have a new sub that just came out, the STF-2 that may work for me now, or I might go for the TN-1220HO in a few months. What's your take on the crossovers Arny mentioned? Thanks, Mike On Mon, 24 Nov 2003 19:37:01 -0500, "Arny Krueger" wrote: "b" wrote in message Hello, I think someone was asking about this recently but there was no clear answer.I,d like to add a sub to extend the range of the A10's, so something with a built in crossover would be good- I can spend up to $400.Thanks for any ideas and thanks to Scott Dorsey for recommending the A10's as they're a big improvement of the event 20/20's I used to use. news ![]() Thanks a lot to both of you for the advice. Arny, do you have a preference between the Rane and the dbx? Not really. They both have their strengths and weaknesses. If you want to move down the price scale there are Behringer crossovers, and if you want to move up there are Ashlys, etc. Scott, I went to the HSU site and their stuff looks great! Hsu has an excellent reputation. If you read the FAQs they mention that they have problems with customers complaining about buzzing sounds that invariably turn out to be due to stuff in the room vibrating. This is actually a good sign. They have a new sub that just came out, the STF-2 that may work for me now, or I might go for the TN-1220HO in a few months. What's your take on the crossovers Arny mentioned? Thanks, I believe the Hsu equipment includes amps and crossovers. |

Thanks, The Rane AC-22 can be hacked up to be decent, but the filters on it are kind of harsh-sounding stock. They also have a sub-bass filter in there that I don't like. I sort of look at the Rane as a good project because it can be turned into a good crossover and it shows up used for cheap. I don't know the MX-22. Never used the DBX. One of the things about the A10s is that you can probably get by with a very low filter slope and a wide crossover point. The Hsus go fairly high up so you can get a lot of overlap. I tend to like wider crossovers when I can get away with them. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
