Default Mac 9600 w/Firewire

Has anyone tried using FireWire adapter cards/drives with this machine?
I've tried OS 8.6 through 9.1, the latter finally allowing the drive to
appear
on the desktop, but I could barely get the drive initialized (crashed during
HFS+ initialization, rebooted and formatted it as HFS standard). Then
it appeared to copy files O.K. from SCSI drives, but when I tried any
larger files (like audio files, specifically), it would hang and force me to
restart the computer. The card (Adaptec 4300) supports a 9600 running
8.6 or higher, but didn't come with any useful software or troubleshooting
info. The drive (Acom 80GB external) had no Mac drivers in the box or
online. Could memory be an issue? Is 128MB enough to do a simple transfer
of files from SCSI to FireWire on a 9600 Mac, or does it even matter?

I have done this with no problem; make sure you are using the latest
version of Firewire for your OS version.

Make sure you put the FireWire card in one of the two buss master slots
available on the 9600 and it'll work fine.

Tim, I had the same problems you are having. I tried the drivers
recommended by the retailer of the drive and firewire card. The driver
recommended was a newer Apple driver. I did some research on the Apple
webe site and found that I needed a certain driver that actually older
than the one recommended. I installed that driver with OS 8.6 and the
drive now works fine.
This was after spending many hours trying different OS's and driver
configurations.
I would give you the needed driver info, but I don't have access to that
machine right now.
Hope this helps.
Jim

Rail,

Which of the 9600's slots are the two buss master slots?

I was about to drop a FW card in an 8500 that has an Audiomedia 3 card
in the slot closest to the power supply. Does it matter where the FW
card goes in that model? Any possible side effects with the AM3?

Thanks.

1 and 4 are the buss master slots in a 9600... I'm not that familiar with
the 8500. The 300MHz (and better) 9600 machine also had a better PCI
controller card on the logic board than the lesser models.

A search with Google groups confirms that the 8500 allows only one bus
master card. usually the first position of the three is the master slot.
