I have a client with 4 2500" 8 Track 1/2" reels and 2 1" 8 or 16 track reels that need to transferred to .wav files for remixing and editing,
I have found one person in Canada that can do this, but I wold prefer someone in the US if possible. An internet search wasn't much help as most transfer houses were oriented to consumer gear. I would do it myself, but I never had those formats. |

It is a real pain to get everything lined up properly on those narrowtrack formats. Track alignment is touchy, and getting the noise reduction to track properly is a major pain. When searching for Ampex 1000 tape recorders, I came across Steve's site, and neat to see one machine being revamped. Much later, I talked to a person who held 700+ tapes, some material I've been seeking. We chatted on the phone and both us of knew of Steve. Steve had already done work for this individual, actually, the Jackson 5's very first recordings. Sadly, for Steve, since he didn't want me interfering, he lost his opportunity to transfer those other 700+ tapes, others purchased them. People, lick Tom Moulton claimed they tapes we destroyed. Ace Records, UK, probably knew of the tapes, but I guess their offer wasn't enough, but I got mixed stories. Why I have to do my own research. Small world. Jack It is a real pain to get everything lined up properly on those narrowtrack formats. Track alignment is touchy, and getting the noise reduction to track properly is a major pain. Good luck. I called them per your advice for some tapes I had and they really didn't seem to want to deal with them. Maybe they feel different about the larger multitracks, because they're certainly set up for it very very well. That being said, it won't be inexpensive, either. Undoubtedly, Steve is probably the best in the business for this type of thing. david They are probably rather used to requests for this service, and the customers subsequently bailing as soon as they hear the cost ! geoff |

Those would likely be people who recorded in a semi-pro studio 30 years ago, kept the multitrack tape (not very common), and want to revive those sessions. Those who really have something worth saving are likely willing to pay for a professional job. Those just curious will probably abandon the project or look for folks who still have the gear, maybe not meticulously restored and maintained, who can get audio off the tape so they can play with it. Rick is conscientious and is a good engineer (as well as a great guitar player) and would probably do a competent job. -- For a good time, visit http://mikeriversaudio.wordpress.com |

Glad for you that you have so much empty time. My own EXPERIENCE of providing similar services is that over 80% of potential customers quickly disappear once they find the likely cost of their desires. And that is with relatively modest charges. geoff |

Not really; I just has Steve's link on my site... http://www.angelfire.com/empire/abpsp/credits.html My own EXPERIENCE of providing similar services is that over 80% of potential customers quickly disappear once they find the likely cost of their desires. And that is with relatively modest charges. True. In usenet, I found Vince. Vince told me the story how he found a Master tape of a 70's Pop group, King Harvest, at a NJ Flea Mart. Vince was disappointed after he received no credit or any reward after turning over the tape. I would have done the tape transfer and dealt from there. Jack geoff |
