Default Tried the Studio Projects C4s?

Hi all,

If you've tried the Studio Projects C4 mics, could you please tell us about
your experience -- what were they great for, what were shortcomings, did you
try both capsules, etc. Compare with any other mics?

Hi,

I recently got a pair of Studio Projects C4 mics to record a live classical
concert. I am very pleased with them - they got me my first ever paid recording
job Previously, I was recording with a Casio DA-R100 DAT and a Sony ECM-959
which is really no comparison.

For recording a concert by a professional baroque ensemble (soprano, flauto
traverso, baroque bassoon, baroque violin and harpsichord), I took the C4s, a
loaned Midas XL42 preamp, and an M-Audio USB Mobile Pre attached to my iBook. (I
found the Mobile Pre's pres to be completely useless - I think they just amplify
the noise, not the signal).

The performers were extremely pleased with the recording. They said it sounded
as good as a commercial CD, which I take as a compliment...

If anybody is interested, I could make a short sound sample available for
download.

I did actually try both capsules, but not in the way I had intended: After
trying out spaced omnis, I wanted to find out what ORTF cardioids sounded like.
I decided to use the spaced omnis because this allowed the flute to be a bit
closer to the mic. While fiddling with the capsules, I dropped one of the omni
capsules. Trying to put it back on in a rush, I jammed the screw thread. Unable
to put the omni back on, I had to use the cardioid capsule on the right channel
and the omni on the left. Not that it made any difference in sound - I guess
there was so much reverberation in the church that the directional pattern was
irrelevant.

The capsule did not suffer any damage. I was able to repair the screw thread
with a sharp awl. What I don't like about the mics is the shockmount - it has
almost no grip on the mics. (I heard that the C4 now ship with an improved
shockmount design.)
