Tony of kick drum and low bass but not enough mid/high bass. Everything's in phase. I'm trying to decide if I should get one of these new heads that have parametric eq built in(Alpine, Pioneer) or if I should add woofers on the rear of the head. Any recommendations for a size of woofer that'll give me what I want? I have some 5.5 inch boston two way but they seem to exaggerate the problem. I could put a cap on them so they don't add high mid/ highs. I don't want to spend money on an amp right now, besides it's loud enough. The guys at circuit city say they have the same problem. They couldn't figure out the controls on the decks with parametric eq well enough to show me if they could solve my problem. Any help is appreciated Don |

Thanks for the responses. Yah, I meant 100-300Hz. There's no crossovers on the deck, the 6x9 is a three way full range speaker. I'll reverse the phase of one of the 6x9's to see if that helps, but they should already be in phase. I'll also reverse the phase of the sub. I can't use a equalizer without adding a amp afterwards. The vehicle is a trooper 4x4. It's pretty big, I thought the natural acoustics might be responsible for the dip. Also, the bass eq on the deck seams to be centered at lower frequencies so I can't turn it up without adding too much sub bass. The kid at circuit city said this common these days, everyone wants to go boom. Can anyone recommend a 5", 6" or 8" woofer that won't act like a sub? Under $100? When I played around with the parametric eq's on alpine and pioneer decks I couldn't dial in the right frequency and turn it up enough. They only boost about 6db. Thanks for all your help, Don Let us know how the phase test goes. You REALLY shouldn't have a big midbass problem. Might be slight, since you arent amping the 6x9s, and HUs dont generally put out enough power to compete with a sub, BUT it shouldnt be so annoying that you would post about it. |

Hmm... 6x9's in front? Do you mean they are door mounted? That could
be your problem right there. Most 6x9s have thiele small parameters optimized for free air application and need HUGE enclosure volumes. Im willing to bet that a door install is less than optimal for this speaker. I am not a fan of EQs being used to compensate for installation defficiencies (see my post below). from my experience EQs are not capable of over coming the laws of physics. I would suggest moving the 6x9s to the rear deck, giving them the large enclosure volume they need, and adding a 6.5" component set in the front door. Hope this helps... I can go into more detail if you like. Garrett Don wrote: I've got a nakamichi HU running boston 6x9s in front, nothing on rear, and a infinity basslink sub woofer amp. Thanks for your help Garrett,
The 6x9's are mounted in sealed enclosures at my feet. They're the average size enclosures you see at audio shops. Yes, they're in the way, but I wanted them pointing at me so I'd get some stereo separation. I used to have them in the rear doors, but with the rear seat in front of them and a tourniquet pulled over they didn't have much affect. I need the tourniquet to hide my many tools from passerbys on the street. I had boston 5.5's in the kick panel then. When I moved the 6x9's to the front the sound greatly improved. I think I need 6x9 or 6" woofers in the back doors. The old wires are still there ready to be hooked up. I agree with you, electronics aren't the best solution for bad acoustics. I didn't have a chance to test for correct phase today. Hopefully that's all it is. Don Sanitarium wrote: Hmm... 6x9's in front? Do you mean they are door mounted?
