Default Adobe Audition 1.5

Today I had to convert another MP3 file to wav. Like so many MP3 files I've
converted with Adobe Audition 1.5, the song was clipped. This song is one by a
major artist, purchased from Amazon.com.

Thinking that something was wrong, I did the conversion using Easy CD-DA
Extractor. Not only was the song not clipped, the levels were exactly as you
would hope for.

What am I doing wrong with Audition that changes the gain of imported MP3 files?
Is there an "adjust gain" setting? DSP is not checked. Thankfully I don't have
many MP3 files.

Never mind. I was opening two files. One was clipped, the other was normal. The
clipped one is clipped whether I convert it with CDDA or Adobe Audition.

Sorry for the wild goose chase.

6? The rate they've been deleting the useful stuff it must be barely
recording by now.

They put it back in Version 6 and added new stuff, too. They tossed out a
lot in 5.5 because (I think) of meeting a CS deadline and because they
claimed they wanted to rewrite lots of it to take advantage of multicore
processors. I like version 6 a lot.

Anybody using the later versions of Audition? I'm using 1.5 (which is
essentially Cool Edit Pro) on one machine and Audition 3.0 on the computer,
where I do all my audio and video work. What am I missing?

I have both and can tell you that:

Audition 1 was exactly the same as the last version CoolEdit 2.
something but Audition 1.5 while close, is not.

Audition 3 will read older CoolEdit and Audition files but needs to
resave them specifically as it's own to retain any work done on them.

My bitch with Audition 3 is that it doesn't allow a user to mix audio
driver types so if you have a combinination of different devices you
can't use them. It also seems to use up much more cpu and memory than
1.5.

My only problems with 1.5 is that it doesn't support ASIO so latency
must be dealt with and that it refuses to work with my Tranzport.
Fortunately, the Tranzport works perfectly with CoolEdit 2. whatever.
Since the files of the CoolEdit and the 1.5 are totally compatible, I
track with CoolEdit and edit with 1.5. For some reason 1.5 editing
goes faster even though the 2 programs operate the same. Go figure.

I am actually on version 2.0 right now, not going to 5.5 unless 2 fails me
again, as it has in the past. I didn't realize they cut out a lot of stuff
in 5.5. Maybe that's why it was so cheap.

I donīt really understand, why anyone would want to go to a cutdown 5.5,
when 6 with more features is available. ;-)

mcp6453:

Encoding mp3 can also lead to "overs", even if your master is peaked at -1dBfs. This has something to do with sampling or quantization, someone else can explain that aspect better.

That's why I peak no higher than -5dBfs for any project. Even then I've had mp3s, even higher bitrate, with a peak or two sneaking by at -2dBfs. Shoot me, flame me, troll me - but that's how I roll.

I NEVER have an over or a clip indication, and don't need any special software to hold my hand through the creative process.
