Default fiberglass sub case in tire well

The salesman had stated that the spare tire itself was part of the
crumple zone. Nobody said anything about the well itself.

If the installer was sharp, he would create a removable lid for the
well. I've considered doing just that but I'm too low on cash to buy a
sub and amp.

If the installer was sharp, he could use the useless space inside either
quarter panel. There is easily 2cu feet on the side of most cars.

it could be done. maybe use a pair of 8's in a fiberglass/steel enclosure
with a front side covering of dense foam and fabric or something.........

I am the orginial poster. I am totally lost at this point on
whether or not I should remove the spare tire with respect to
safety. I really don't mind being without a spare tire other then
the safety issue.

I agree, there is normally a fair amount of unused space behind the
quarter panel, but that is not the case in the Volkswagen New
Beetle, the car I am installing the sub into. There is space
between the back bumper and that panel. The problem is that I
cannot get anything bigger then an 8 inch in the space, virtically
speaking.

Enclosure? It has the whole trunk! A pair of 12" subs would go nicely
with it. A few areas of sheetmetal would require vibration dampening
material but I don't think it would be much trouble. The air pressure
won't be too high because it's such a large enclosure.

I was thinking that the seat cushions could be made of a suspended
webbing that's pulled into seat forms by elastic cords. There'd be a
semi-elastic webbing on the outside for comfort and a strong steel
screen behind that for rear collision safety.

The hard part would be its strength. I'm not confident enough in my
fiberglass and carbon fiber skills to make a seat that would survive a
rear collision crash. It would have to keep pasengers from falling
through to the trunk at 20 to 25 G.

sub enclosure.

I've thought of that. The space can be very hard to access. The air
outlet vents are usually somewhere in there too so simply lining the
whole thing with fiberglass or carbon fiber wouldn't be a good idea.

BAAAH! **** THE VENTS! Chances are if you have someone in your trunk,
you don't want them to breathe (there's about 2 hours worth of air in
there anyway).

What I'd like is a rear seatback with built-in subs and working seat
cushions. It seems possible to create but not as a DIY project.

Au contraire. Now, do you mean to just have the ports coming through, or
would you actually like the subs to shoot through? I've done both, and
its remarkably easy.

THERE IS NO SAFETY ISSUE WITH REMOVING THE SPARE TIRE!

I see. Maybe I'll go look at a bug tomorrow after class. It'll give me a
chance to **** with the VW salesman.

I tried to get some feedback on this subject previously, but no one
wished to comment....hopefully I can get some feedback here. This is an
example of a fiberglass stealth enclosure, any opinions on the
integrity/quality? I don't have much trunk space so I want to preserve
what I can and I wont have to sacrifice the spare. Thanks, hopefully
this thread isn't dead. http://tinyurl.com/kbvl
