Usually transplanting the tape into a new shell is the way to go, but you can splice the stuff, etc. It's a little harder than working on cassettes but not by much. If you don't want to try fixing it yourself per Scott Dorsey's comments, Eddie Ciletti at Tangible Technology might have help or advice for you. http://www.tangible-technology.com/ -- hank alrich * secret mountain audio recording * music production * sound reinforcement "If laughter is the best medicine let's take a double dose" |

And are they assembled with screws? They are assembled with screws, but since they aren't normally bulkloaded by duplicators the way cassettes are, you can't get empty shells. You'll have to bite the bullet and spend four bucks for another tape to sacrifice. Used to be that you could get a "Cassette repair kit" from Radio Shack that included a new cassette shell, but I've never seen anything like that for Hi-8. Maybe the way to go is to buy a new screw-assembled tape and sacrafice it for the shell. (if such even exists - he'd need to know a brand to buy since they usually come shrink wrapped so you can't see the actual cassette) Yup... I have done this with DAT tapes more time than I can count. The Hi-8 tapes are a bit harder to do than the DATs, though but not by much. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
