One good part of Clunker Junker is that there will be a lot of
halfway decent old car radios in the salvage yards. In recent years,
several aftermarket and even some OEM car radios have gone back to
giving halfway decent AM performance as well as FM. You can convert
them into tuners by modifying them with a line out (some even have
one) or use them as is with a small 12 volt supply made from a
surplus transformer and some filter caps or what have you. Put them in
a nice salvaged mid fi speaker cab with a suitable driver and you have
a swank table radio.

I forgot to mention, if you are doing the pulling, bring a pair of
aviation snips and get ALL the connectors because the connectors get
expensive when bought separately. Leave enough lead length you can
splice comfortably. Also, a lot of cars use a surprisingly good grade
of wire in underdash bundling and if you build tube amps, etc, it
makes fine internal connecting wire.

Sorry, you're wrong. The rules are available as a pdf at the cars.gov
website. The clunkers can be parted out except for the engine block and as
long as the drivetrain is not sold as a unit. The engines of course must be
destroyed by the dealer by replacing the oil with a solution of sodium
silicate and then running the engine until it seizes which usually takes
only a minute or two. As for the radios, some owners remove them before the
trade-in; indeed my friend did that when he traded his old Mercedes in for a
new Kia Spectra under the CFC program.

hmm, i checked that site, didn't see the link to the regs.
only a vague Q&A that some (unspecified) parts
are allowed to be salvaged.
the information I got about (almost) total anniholation
was form a dealer

Google TheRule.pdf and on p.51, you'll see:
"During the six-month period prior to the required crushing or shredding of
the trade-in vehicle, the disposal facility may sell any parts of the
vehicle other than the engine block19 or drive train (unless the drive train
is dismantled and sold in parts)."
