I'm new to audio recording and need some help.
I just got my equiptment:
-presonus studio live 1642
-audio technica 2035
-and pop filter

I am planning to record one of my classmates tommrrow and need some
advice.
I understand the basics of compression, but I could use some advice on
what levels I should start with. She has a moderate / country singer
voice. And she will be recording The Climb. Any sudgustions?

Don't.
There are times to compress when tracking, but if you don't know precisely
what you're doing, just record it straight and worry about it after the fact
when you have time to play with it and hear what it is doing.

1) Set her maximum level for -10dBFS and record using 24 bit.
2) Do NOT apply compression during original recording (tracking).

Also:

Find a room with really good acoustics in which to record. It'll make a big,
big difference.
