Why Cuba is a waste of time
wrote in message ... Cuba can do business with every country n the world besides the US and yet it is a ******** supreme. The US does not approve of its own trading partnerts doing business with Cuba, and so to keep good relations with the US, (a much larger market) most countries refrain from doing so. France, Canada and Northern Korea are notable exceptions. Cuba's trade difficulties are mainly due to the insistence by the US that Cuba does not receive credit from the World Bank. Cuba is a delightful countrty for European tourists, there are plenty of beautiful old American cars but no visitors from the US, who seem to embarrass themselves and others wherever they go. Their current situation is preferable to the previous domnination by the US, with most of the land owned by the United Fruit Company, and businesses and hotels controlled by the US mafia. But there are clearly winds of change blowing. It will be interesting to see what the Cuban people decide is the right course for them. Iain |

But there are clearly winds of change blowing. It will be interesting to see what the Cuban people decide is the right course for them. Most Cubans who were not either Marxist ideologues or plain lazy/ stupid/indolent went to Miami. They could do very well in Cuba with a number of things, but the socialist economic system has wiped out the leaders. Success for Cuba will entail the removal of the regime and the repatriation of at least a reasonable number of the best Cubans now in Florida. It will be difficult. That said, the isolation policy of the US was largely a case of pandering to the Cuban community in Florida and a basic unwillingness of leaders of either party to be perceived as weak on communism, which of course was an entirely reasonable fear in the Cold War. It did not work in terms of getting Castro out, he is indeed popular-at least to the extent of if you don't like him you keep damn quiet or get out. Many Cubans do genuinely love him, though, as and for the same reasons some Russians (and I mean Russians, not the international tribe) loved Stalin and Lenin. |
