Default Vortexion MR1230 12 channel valve unit

Hi there,

I have been given a Vortexion MR1230 12 channel valve unit to fix.

does anyone have any information on these units?

it has a white front and a 25 pin connector ( i assume to attach to
tape deck or input patchbay)

I cant find a reference to this unit ANYWHERE!

All I can find is this one on eBay.

Cheers

I had use of an old 4-channel version once, lousy compared with the stuff
available today. 12-channel mono is so archaic.
Are there no discreet input and output connectors?

So either... divide it into two 6-source mixers by adding another mix bus
serving the re-routed 'odd-number' channels or numbers 7-12, and copying its
'fixed' output stage, or... rip out and save those input transformers!
NB The pots might be clapped out.
Jim

I repaired a Vortexion amp a while ago. AFAIK these were designed for
factory PA tea time anouncements and the like. Really not very impressive
kit and never intended or required to be much else.

Good luck.

Yes. Vortexion amps (100v line) were ubiquitous in UK factories in the
1960s where "Music While You Work" was played.

The mixers however, were aimed at a different market. The four channel
type, that Jim describes, were seen in theatres and halls. Their huge
rotary
controls make them very distinctive (I wonder who made those knobs:-)

The 12-way mixer which the OP mentions was used in many London theatres.
It had an umbilical with a circular connector that fitted into the control
room
end of a multiway stage box.

Quite often the outputs (on quarter inch jack sockets) were mounted on the
front panel) The cables got in the way when mixing.

Those huge knobs [OTT only on the 3- and 4-channel panels, 12-source
rotaries would have been compact!] might have been either Painton or Bulgin
makes, with 2 shaft-gripping grub-screws at 90 degs.

As there was no Master pot provided, IMO the Vortexion output needs some
kind of watchdog level meter!

Yes indeed. There was a three channel version
of the mixer with a Sifam 1mA meter in the place
where the fourth pot would have been. I used the
meter on the EMI TR51 tape recorder to monitor
the level.

Halcyon days:-)
