Unquestionably the best days of audio magazines were when a large
percentage of readers had hands-on skills and technical knowledge. Audio started out as Audio Engineering and was quite good until roughly 1965 or so, and High Fidelity was readable in its early days as well. Stereophile published good hands on tech articles at one time too. Ed Dell, who later started The Audio Amateur, had an article on building a beefed up Stereo 70 in that magazine in its early J.Gordon Holt days. Even then it was recognized that the execution of this circuit by Dyna left a whole bunch to be desired. Smaller publishers put out a lot of hi-fi magazines too. Some of these were combined with general electronics or with music review. Schlocko publishers like Myruff Ass (Myron Fass) and outfits like Dell cranked out a bunch of these. -- Message posted using http://www.talkaboutaudio.com/group/rec.audio.opinion/ More information at http://www.talkaboutaudio.com/faq.html |
