What is your friend's budget?
Where does your friend want to acquire this mic?
Why does he think he wants to BUY a microphone
for a temporary project?

Good luck if he hopes to construct an authentic-sounding violin sample
set :-) Stick to the programmed sounds.

But he could get some useful drum sounds. Actually, going too "hi-fi"
on this sort of job can be counter-productive. What's he got lying
around for e.g. recording vocals?

Not temporary at all ... heis a very serious musician .

If I had to own one good microphone, it would probably be a good omni.
Try B&K 4006, Sennheiser MKH-20 or MKH-8020, or one of the Schoeps
Collette mikes with a free-field omni capsule.

Skip the violin. Too much of the sound is interpretation while playing.
There's no way to duplicate the variety in real time on a keyboard.

If he wants a string section filler, mellotron kind of sound, that's easy.
But a solo violin requires a violinist to manipulate the synthesizer. Sort
of cancels out the advantages.

The room you do it in is at least as important. You want a really dead room.
Then, close mic with a measurement-type mic like the Behringer ECM 8000.
