Looks like an excellent table. The question, of course, is how high the
bidding will go; it's a seven-day auction and it's only been up for 4 hours.
But if I were you I'd bid on it, up to whatever you can stand.

Caveats: You'll need a cartridge, since there isn't one in the arm. I
*think* the Thorens's motor is well-shielded enough that you can use a Grado
(or is it a DC motor? I've forgotten). Assuming that's correct, a Grado in
about the $100 range will sound very, very good.

Plan on replacing the drive belt -- that won't cost much.

If worst comes to worst and something breaks, Thorens is still in business,
so you can get replacement parts.

Once you're set up with this turntable, or another good one, do what Scott
said and look for a used record cleaning machine. Oh, and I think you needed
a decent sound card too; go for M-Audio, best bang for the buck. Or look for
a used CardDeluxe on e-bay.

Peace,
Paul

Gack... had one of these in the 70's. Most cheap
TT manufactured today will outperform this boat
anchor and come will have a warranty .

How about a Denon DP-29F ($150) and Berhringer
UCA202 (ADC/$50) on the tape output of your Sony
receiver?

It is... it's a DC motor and it's on the other side of the platter from
where the cartridge is.

HERE IS THE GRADO SECRET: If you are using one of these tables which have
comparatively heavy arms, most of the inexpensive Grado cartridges will not
track well because they are designed for a lighter arm. The solution is to
buy the Grado DJ-100 cartridge which is intended for heavier arms and heavier
tracking.... BUT you throw out the spherical DJ stylus that came with it.
Instead, you get the replacement stylus for the Grado ZTE+1 cartridge,
which is an elliptical stylus with the same mount which will fit the DJ-100.

The end result is a cartridge with that lush Grado lower midrange, which
tracks well on cheap arms.

The record cleaning machine is a miracle. One of the best investments
possible. If you buy a cheap one, it will be more work to use than an
expensive one, but it will clean just as well.

Caveat emptor

indeed!

I owned one of these back in the day and the arm is very resonant, in
a way that is audible on (and spoils) everything that you play. I
suppose you could damp it, but it was so bad I didn't bother - I just
sold it. It was the first time I really heard such a thing as I was
not in the habit of looking for minutae.

Yes, the main problem with the original TD-160 was the arm... and this
table is being sold with a retrofitted arm which is a good bit better
than the original. I think this also would be an acceptable entry-level
table, but be aware that you'll have to add around a hundred dollars to
the price for a cartridge.

A qualified, yes. Went through a Stanton 681EEE, AT-65
and two Stanton 881s using this table.

The arm and TT cover are very microphonic. The arm
is poorly decoupled from the deck. The RCA connector
cable and connection termination points are below
throw-away-cables (free today) in material quality.
Moving on to MC cartridges with higher quality pickup
pre-amps made it impractical to use except at low
volumes.

But I think you had it right "back in the day." Now called
*the-good-old-days* by boomers.
