Hello,
I'm thinking seriously about gettting the VS-2480, as i've had very good results with my VS-840 on my first CD. One thing i'm wondering about though. In a live recording situation, can you plug the mics directly into the XLRs on the VS-2480, and use the built in compression/limiting on all 16 channels at the same time? My drummer gets a little crazy, and it would be nice not to need a separate compressor for each mic. Also, i've heard rumors about distortion on the pre-amps of the VS-2480. Anyone know about this? I know that my VS-840 sounded very nice, even with the compressed data. Thanks in advance, Dr. Slick |

I don't have a VS-2480, but I did consider one as a step up from my VS-880, so I looked it over pretty well. in general, anything you can do on your VS-840 you can do more of on the bigger models. The only caveat is that Roland's general approach restricts the total number of available effects (including limiting), so you won't have 16 *independent* compressor/limiters. Also, i've heard rumors about distortion on the pre-amps of the VS-2480. Anyone know about this? I know that my VS-840 sounded very nice, even with the compressed data. The preamps on all of these stand-alone DAWs are not the best. That said, if you liked the VS-840, you'll love the VS-2480. Go ahead and jump in, the water's fine! Neil |

I think the mic pres in the VS2480 are a step up from those in the
VS1680, which are noisy when cranked. On my VS1680 this becomes noticable as the noise accumulates with multiple tracks on playback. You always have the option of strapping in another mic pre with digital outs if the built in pre is too noisy for a particularly quiet source. That said, I think the channel dynamics are probably *after* the digital converters and so would not protect you from nasty digital overs. If you don't get a definitive answer to your question here, ask over on the VS2480 forum on www.vsplanet.com . From what i read on the VS usersgroup, the comp/limiting or dynamics functions of each channel are separate from the effects card. Otherwise, you would be limited to 4 indepedant mono compressors. Just set nominal levels to -20dB and be done with it ( assuming there's enough floor on the meters to do that). The comps/lims are post A/D anyway so are no help with this. |

There were a batch of early 2480s with questionable mic pre's and Roland fixed the problem on newer models. Their limiters are of decent quality for software jobbies but maybe you can use a few outboards for the important sources..kick & snare. If you liked your 840 you'll like the 2480 with 24 bit conversion and 56k processing. Better effects too. Monitor capability is cool. kelly |
