Hi. I'm in need of a quality mic preamp, and have narrowed my choices
down to two options.

1.) M-Audio Portable Duo
and
2.) Denecke AD-20

I am running the signal to the line input (digital) of my Nomad Jukebox
3. I am recording natural and artificial sound effects for a PC game I am
working on. I need the unit with the highest headroom/preamp quality ratio,
to get those very subtle sounds without noise floors being noticable.

If I get the Duo, I'll need the CO2 s/pdif coax to miniplug converter,
battery cable for the C02, and the appropriate cables.
If I take the AD-20 route, I'll need a PS-2 Phantom Power Adapter,which I
heard is a bit noisy. Also, the appropriate optical cables.

I found a quote from ound designer Rudy Trubitt on the Ad-20 used in
outdoor recording. "Next, I may add an external preamp. I use the Denecke
AD-20 Zefiro Inbox, which doesn't offer phantom power and is not a high-gain
device, but it's easy to use, inexpensive, and very rugged."
I've also heard a few great reviews on the Duo's preamps, so I'm a bit lost
as to exactly which unit will suit me best.

Stupid question, I know, but I couldn't find this on your site... Does
the portable Duo package come with a recharge unit? And how many years will
the unit work, with a near-daily use?

Thanks,

Mike

The Nomad JB3 records at 16/44.1 so the Duo's 24/96 capability is
overkill, unless you eventually plan to upgrade.

Does the Mic2496 have an option to dither its output to 16-bit?

No, it doesn't.
