Default Data-encryption and audio / multimedia computers

I work for a university multimedia studio. As happens sometimes, an
over-reaching dictum has come down from high which mandates data
encryption on all university owned computers. They didn't think about
the fact that some of us might need every bit of performance we can
get from our machines.

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this they can share. I
really don't know what to expect.
