As expected, the results so far show a variety of ways that we obtain
music: Web shopping, in store, recording school and church groups, etc. I was struck again by how it is all changing during a visit to L.A. this past weekend. The current market for music certainly changes how my visits to a big city are conducted. Before, I very much looked forward to visits to Tower Classical (and sometimes the main store across the street), Amoeba, Virgin, and wonderful "Mom and Pop" small stores. Now the second largest city in the country has precious little. Amoeba is still good (for both new and used, CD and LP, all genres), and there is still a small spattering of the independent stores (including a fantastic, though very over-priced LP only store), but there are fewer every visit. Obviously, it's just the way of the world now, and one has to accept it. I'll continue to do my part to support the brick and mortars when the price differential isn't too much, but I'm doing more online shopping as well. I'm OK at delayed gratification (heck, my professional life is ALL about that: spending my life gleaning tiny interpretive nuances from great composers, practicing musical instruments over a lifetime, etc.), but it was fun to go on a shopping trip and rushing home to listen to that new recording and discovering what is there. So now it takes a few days to get the stuff in the mail; no big deal, I guess. I'm still sad about what we are losing though, in terms of human interaction with like-minded hobbyists, etc. |

There are at least 2 audio clubs in this metro area that are AFAIK still active, and there are other music listening-related clubs where audiophiles can find a home. For example, there is a jazz-lovers club that our audio club has had joint meetings with. I've been a member of SMWTMS for about 35 years. The club membership has been fairly stable in terms of numbers, about 40 members with 20-30 showing up for a typical meeting. That's pretty typical for a fraternal organization. There are also a number of meetings that are arranged through the club, such as a recent visit to a member who has an outstanding A/V room that I believe I have described here. There have been a lot of very lasting and stable relationships that have formed through the club including the ABX partners, many of whom still hang out together at club meetings, and also have other social gatherings with our wives and significant others. Our club no longer advertises its meetings in RAO due to years of childish harrasment by the Middiot and his posse. Hasn't hurt a bit because anybody who is serious about audio gets their business done in the other Useent audio groups. :-( |

I'm still sad about what we are losing though, in terms of human interaction with like-minded hobbyists, etc. I agree - and I love physically browsing through records and discovering something unexpected that I wind up bringing home. Browsing on-line just isn't the same. There's also a social element for me. My favorite record store in town is a place that I'm comfortable just hanging out at, and the owner is quite happy to play anything that's already open. I get to discover a lot of music that way. -- Bill |

Half-Price Books is a regular stop, as are some good thrift stores in the area, and we (fortunately) still have several good record shops here. If there's something specific I want I'll look online. eBay has had a detrimental effect on finding deals at record stores. They can research the prices so easily now. I bought a sealed MFSL Donald Fagen Nightfly a couple of years ago for $20 at one. I saw another one recently for $150. So it goes. Most CDs are readily available, so I check the brick and mortar stores locally first. If what I want isn't available I'll order online. To me online shopping is in addition to, not in lieu of, visiting a store. It isn't a problem for me to visit stores frequently as my business has me out-and-about and I know where all the stops are.:-) |

I recently sold two instruments that I had paid $200 each for in a pawn shop a few years ago on ebay, neither one very special. One brought $2350, one brought $1500. I have to believe there's something like the housing market building up in the instrument world. A mid-1960s Strat that was going for $3-4,000 5-6 years ago is now well over $20K. At their current rate of appreciation they should all be worth over a million in another 10 years. I mean, these are not Stradivarious violins... Maybe I'm wrong, but I wanted to get out before the market crashes. |
