Some American composers are not terribly well-known in
Europe, even though many of them are from European families who have emigrated to the US. A good example is Erich Korngold. I was listening last night to "Die Tote Stadt" a recording in which I was involved years ago for RCA. Korngold was a brilliant composer, and as a child prodigy greatly impressed Gustav Mahler. By his early 30s he had composed several operas in the grand Wagnerian style, and was a professor at the Vienna State Academy. He emigrated not only to America but to Hollywood, where he became a film composer of some stature. Do you know his work? There is some interesting info at: http://www.mfiles.co.uk/composers/Erich-Korngold.htm -- Iain Aural perception is a skill that requires study and careful development over a long period of time. Few have it as a natural gift. |

In general, if you mention the name Eric Korngold to the man-in-the-street here, you will get only a blank stare in return. And even among classical music listeners, most will know him, if at all, only by his film music. |

It is strange how film music is not valued as an art in its own right. I studied under Bernard Herrmann, a brilliant American film composer who held a master class in London. Few people will recall his name (and people in the UK well may confuse him with a conductor of the same name who led the NDO (the BBC Northern Dance Orchestra) But everyone remembers the music from Psycho, with the girl in the shower, the silhouette of the knife, and the violins playing "eek, eek, eek" !
