Mixer builder/designer thinktank folks
Ive been thinking that maybe it would be beneficial if I compiled a list of
tracks that I am fond of, burned them to CD, and sent them out to all the folks that are contributing to this project. The tracks I have selected are the very reason I became interested in this idea, and now want a tube-based mixer of my own. (the labels that the respective tracks belong to all incorporate their own tube mixer designs in their work and credit it in part for the label "signature sound" ) If anyone wants a copy(all lossless of course), shoot me an email @ luxaeternaaudio AT gmail DOT com with your address and name. If nothing else, youll have a hell of a CD to listen to. (and yes, I have *full* permission from all the labels involved to send the tracks out(only 3 smaller companies anyway, no majors) Tynan |

I am curious what sort of recorder you will be using this mixer with, especially whether it is an analog or a digital recorder? Regards, John Byrns -- Surf my web pages at, http://fmamradios.com/ |

Or just a box of valve headphone amps, to go with a new multi-track digital mixer/recorder? Way to go, in reality, novelties aside, I think, for that special sound. Ian |

No, not hardly, mine is and will remain a pure tube mixer, except for the power supply, no "SS back end" need apply. However the type of recorder it is to be used with will have some influence on the details. Or just a box of valve headphone amps, to go with a new multi-track digital mixer/recorder? Yes, it is "just a box of valve headphone amps", however it is only a 6 in 2 out mixer, so I assume it will be used with a 2 channel digital recorder of some sort, which is what I was looking to confirm. Way to go, in reality, novelties aside, I think, for that special sound. I'm not sure I follow you there? Regards, John Byrns -- Surf my web pages at, http://fmamradios.com/ |

Regards, John Byrns No problem Sir, , my main recorders are a sound devices 744t and a Nagra V. I also have a stellavox sp-8 that I back up to when at all possible...but the SD and Nagra take front seat. |

Tynan, being the man of taste that he is, may choose a replica of a Studer C37 or Ampex 351-2 tape recorder. Who's gonna build that? :-)) Iain |

I did just score a Telefunken M-28 for a good price, even if it is only for looks. Well, ive been hard up for one of those new ATR Machines with the Aria upgrades as they are rumoured to be quite good...but I dunno. they did use some variant of the Aria stuff for the reissue/transfer of the living stereo discs I believe, with Siltech Cables, yadda yadda (I use VOVOX cables myself) |

I did just score a Telefunken M-28 for a good price, even if it is only for looks. Telefunken made a series of good professional machines. I don't think the M28 was in that category. They also had a turntable, the PS-81 which is well worth buying if you come across a good one. I have a Studer C37 currently in the early stages of renovation. The J37 (4 tracks on 1") is the one to look for. They are highly sought-after being the machine used to record The Beatles. "Sgt Pepper" I also have a British Leevers Rich ex BBC master machine which has been completely refurbished and performs like new. Just the headblock cover is missing now. http://www.kolumbus.fi/iain.churches...LR/LRE200.html Well, ive been hard up for one of those new ATR Machines with the Aria upgrades as they are rumoured to be quite good...but I dunno. I have no experience of those. It seems there is still a strong demand for old Ampex analogue recorders in the 350 series. They command good prices. they did use some variant of the Aria stuff for the reissue/transfer of the living stereo discs I believe, with Siltech Cables, yadda yadda (I use VOVOX cables myself) I am sure you can hear a difference:-) Your thread on the design of a tube amp mixer is one of the best currently on RAT. Many people actively involved in recording on a day to day basis, have found that a mix (no pun intended) of analogue and digital technology can be used to considerable advantage. I would not even think about a tube mixer these days, but many clients ask for analogue multitrack (Studer A80 or A800 with Dolby SR) for recording. Then the raw material is transferred to a multitrack DAW for digital editing and mixing. That way, you get the best of both worlds - analogue multitrack sound with digital convenience. None of us who remember analogue multitrack editing would wish to go back to that. It takes a stout heart to mark up a splice on a 2" tape with a chinagraph pencil, while a roomful of people look on in awed silence, and then make a physical cut with a razor blade. There are zero levels of undo:-) I keep a 2" editing block on my desk just to remind me of the "good old days" :-) Best regards Iain |

The way I figure it, there arent really any drawbacks to using *exotic* cables(other than the ridiculous prices..which I cant afford..the *voodoo science*..which I am too dumb to understand)...and I am really only gaining on the OFF chance that there are benefits to using it. I get a great price on the stuff, so I have a lot of it. about the tape op.... I imagine it was quite a chore..but goodness, I envy you guys that had to come up that way. There isnt a thing I wouldnt give to be put through the paces and to learn in that manner..being a tape=op, coffee getter, janitor, whatever!!. Guys(that have learned recently..myself included!) these days dont have to work hard, they are computer jockeys for the most part and are spoiled by all this technology. I abhor it. (by the way, if you havent read it, "an eternal golden braid" by culshaw is a fantastic book about the recording of the first ring cycle..that took some balls and talent!). I have been wanting to go back to mixing down to 2-track for a while now, but havent had access to a decent mixer. ..This prospect is very exciting to me. I currently multi-track everything, with a stereo backup, but I want to do it the other way around. I have a really fantastic microphone locker that I am proud of, (u67, schoeps m222/n222/cmc 641/21/2s/8, akg 426b( modified by Stephen Paul Audio), josephson c617 with gefell mk221 and 202 caps, akg c24, dpa 4006, mojave audio ma200 modified for omni characteristic--(amazing mic by the way), gefell m296, gefell m300, m200,270,210, gefell um900, and um92.1s ,and a couple of u87s(also SPAudio), great AD and DA conversion, fantastic recorders(Sound Devices 744 and Nagra V, and Stellavox SP-8), great preamps from Mick Hinton at DAV, Pendulum , and Electronaut..but ive never had a good mixer. Very sad about that. |
