a split snake would be less messy
or look into getting direct outs off the live desk
but I am sure you "could rent" splitters
but if its just a passive Y split, and most are
buying them will quickly seem a better way to spend your money

It depends on how little. If you want to split just a couple of mics,
Whirlwind has some perfectly reasonable transformer-isolated splitters
for cheap enough that it would make sense to just buy a couple.

If you're planning to split all the PA mics on a band, you can
probably find a PA company in your area that has a snake system with a
splitter that you could rent. Or if it's a show with a pretty serious
sound reinforcement system, there may already be a split available, or
the sound company could substitute a different snake to accommodate
you for a relatively small fee.

Unless you own and are supplying all of the equipment, splitting mics
isn't always just a technical/equipment issue, you get into egos and
worriers - who gets the direct line and who gets the isolated one, who
supplies phantom power (you don't both want to do it) and such. You
want to get those things resolved before setting up for the show.
