Default subwoofer

I've got an early 90's Technics system (su-g91 reciever,mains are 3-
way with a total of 4 10" speakers handling the low end)I'm thinking
of getting a powered subwoofer for the usual reasons plus I'd like to
relieve the reciever of handling so much of the low end. When I crank
it up pretty loud it goes into protect mode(shuts down). I'm thinking
the ideal thing would be to use the recievers eq loop to send the left
and right signals to the powered sub, the subs crossover splits it,
then sends only 100hz(or whatever)and up back to the reciever to be
powered and sent to the mains. Is there a powered sub system that has
L and R outputs containing everything above the crossover point? will
I have to get a seperate crossover unit? I'm no expert and may be
thinking all wrong about this. Maybe you can set me straight.
thanks
