Default cheap olympus flash recorder

I just got a little Olympus VN-4100 flash recorder as a more portable,
less parts, replacement for my MD recorder. I am using this strictly
for recording practice sessions (I am a classical musician), and have
encountered the problem that this little Olympus only has two "mic
sensitivity" modes and not an actual record level setting. I am not
looking to spend more than around 100-150, and this is not for
professional recording, but I definitely need to be able to control
the mic sensitivity beyond very sensitive and not quite so sensitive!
If anyone knows of a model of portable flash recorder that has a
dedicated record level feature, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks,

Will

Keep your Minidisk recorder. "Real" recorders aren't quite that cheap
yet. I would recommend the Zoom H2 if you can spring another $50 or
so. But NAMM is coming up in another couple of weeks, Maybe there will
be a breakthrough.

I didn't mention this since it was still under wraps until today, but
if you like how Olympus does flash memory recorders, they've just
introduced a new one that's designed for music recording, the LS-10.
24-bit WAV and all, expected to be about $400 on the street. 12 hours
on a pair of AA batteries is better than most.

Just one more option. I'll reserve judgment until I see one.

Clever how they avoided the mic phantom voltage issue by not providing any
phantom power at all; or even it seems, balanced inputs. :-(

"Whether you're in the recording studio or at the office, the LS-10 will let
you Capture It AllT -- exactly as you hear it -- with dependable,
extra-high-quality digital recording that sounds better than a CD."

this consumer-oriented marketing information gives us the approximate
understanding of what the product really is ;-)

This is typical of many "pocket" recorders. They also don't have XLR
connectors. You're supposed to use the built-in mics and "make really
great recordings" with them.

Funny that's just what I did last week with my H2
