Default Looking for 8-channel preamps

Thanks for your advice, everyone. So it boils down to those two. The
Octopre has the additional dynamics, the Mackie the adjustable mic load.
The Octopre has fans, the Mackie doesn't, as far as I could see.

Which one sounds better, or in what way do they sound different? A guy
in the store described the Mackie Preamps as dull sounding compared to
the Octopre ones. Which one is more suitable if I want a versatile
preamp (drums, acoustic guitar, vocals, etc)?

Thanks again,

Boris

The mic loading shouldn't be an issue; you can always make a Gizmo to load
down an SM57 (681 ohms across pins 2 & 3 of a short cable or barrel
connector).

I haven't heard the Octopre. However, the Focusrite Platinum series is
pretty consistent from model to model; basically they mix-and-match preamp,
EQs, compression, etc. into different combinations optimized for different
things. If the compressor is like the one in the VoiceMaster, it's very
nice-sounding.

Peace,
Paul

I think he makes more money on the Octopre.

That makes him smarter than the average retailer - at least he knows what
the higher margin stuff is! ;-)
