Default Best Expander?

I did some searchin and it looks like the general consenses is the dbx
4BX... this is my application: add dynamics and restore compressed
radio recordings etc for pretty much home audio use.

Now I have Sonic Foundry's soundforge and it has an expander feature,
I tried to apply it to some recordings but it didnt work that well.
Im an expander newbee but would like to liven up some of the
recordings I have.

You know, I've only heard of expanders being used as gates to quiet
something that's noisy, like a buzzing guitar amp. I don't think they
can really remove compression. If you chopped off the top of Mount
Everest, I don't think you could really reconstruct it with something
that simply followed the counters and multiplied them.

Well you are adding artificial dynamics basically. If you have
compressed something, unless you have hard limited it, you should
still have some dynamics. If you want to increase them then you would
use the expander. Obviously you can't bring it back in its original
form. You might actually be able to do it say, to the kick beat or the
snare beat by sending an eq'd sidechain signal into the expander so
that it opens up on the beat.

Sure, I'm not saying it can't be done, but what I am saying is that it's an
"effect" and it isn't going to bring it back to it's original state.

Mark
