taste aside, many movies are just too damn loud. I wear 10db ear plugs usually.

It isn't supposed to sound pleasant. This isn't a Will Ackerman
concert, it's an action scene. It's supposed to make your blood boil.

working on movie sound must be complicated work. but for
pleasant-sounding music, i'd like to make sure i stay away from that
sound.

It is, and when movies have pleasant sounding music, like for instance
behind a tender love scene, it doesn't have metal-clashing sounds.
However I have found that when music fades up between dialog scenes,
these days it's universally too loud no matter what kind of music it
is. I think it's part of "the formula." They can sell more popcorn
that way. People use it as earplugs.

Sounds that were part of a hit film tend to get reused by the
creatively bankrupt. We have the same problem in the record business...
