The manuals are talking about studio installs, whereas dimmer packs are
"luggable" in that context.

When I was doing theatre, they'd bring in 200+ channels of dimmers.
These would be wired direct very close to the service entrance with the
ground lead doubled, making a very robust earth connection.

The sound equipment would then be effectively "separate" . . a much
smaller load usually a service panel or two removed from the lighting.

The "dimmer problem" is most often encountered in a residential or
commercial space that's retrofitted into a studio. Residential dimmers
have to meet emmission standards sufficient for TV viewing, but they
don't stand up to critical listening.

If the power distribution is well-planned and the dimmers are of better
quality (variacs, hopefully), this is less of a problem.

It makes walking through a thing of the past when one can drive through them

No one's walking in **** simply because of this newsgroup, Hank. We're

And in case you didn't notice, a lot of us don't like having to worry about

The problem will go away when the real problem goes away, Ty. That's not a
threat, just a statement of how a lot of us obviously feel. I've been
trying to tone down quite a bit, but it doesn't mean I'm not ****ed about
what's going on and how it's effecting us as Americans. How you view this
newsgroup is obviously different than the way I view it, but at 53 next
week, I don't believe you can offer me any platitudes like "you can't
believe any politician" etc., when the world is going to hell around us.

If anyone isn't scared right now and thinks that the only reason to talk
amongst our peers is to discuss audio and nothing else isn't paying
attention. This isn't just ****, it's ****. Don't get me wrong, Ty. I
agree with you on the level that I can, but there's also a level that says I
can't control some outbursts because these are things that need to be said.
Doing it someplace where I'd have to spend 5 years to gain credibility
enough to say them just isn't in the cards. That I may not have credibility
with you notwithstanding.

And if you recall, I've been just as outspoken about music sharing and a
number of other subjects that adversely effect our ability to do business.
And right now I'd BET that most of us are suffering from a drop in business
and it's pretty easy to see why that drop in business has come about.

OR, I could be wrong. It's been known to happen.

It's probably not just you, but I for one disagree somewhat.

Within his areas of expertise (i.e. excluding loudspeakers, etc.), Phil is as
knowledgeable as anyone here. I know I've learned from him.

For years folks justified the behavior of a certain Boston retailer because
he posted good information. Phil is ten times as technically informed (again,
within his limits) as the self-proclaimed Bad Boy From MA, but the consensus
seems to support the BBFMA's less informed, albeit more entertaining, schtick.

Some of you should go look in the archives and watch yourselves defending
similar behavior.

Yeah, Phil lacks talent in the insult department. Still, I haven't seen him
physically threaten anyone ... which puts him one up on a few "respected"
old timers.

Ty, give the whining a ****ing rest. You've made your point, ad nauseum.
Then again, it's a (somewhat) free country and an unmoderated newsgroup.
Knock yourself out.

Phil, stick to what you know. Dealing out effective insults isn't one of those
things. Or see above freedom. I'm sure the same liberties obtain in Oz.

having about -1MVolt potential. you're an australio-electro-physics
genius -- do you understand now?

just in case, phil, one more time: no. one. wants. you. here.

i'll give you a hint: post a rant about the people on this ng, and
how they are all idiots, "****wits", parrots, etc., (hell, even throw
in a "dickhard" for good measure!), then, conclude with how you give
up on all us schmucks, and that you're off to find a ng worthy of your
presence. this way, you get to leave because *you wanted to*, AND you
save face!

take care, phil, i so hate to see you go -- you could've taught us so
much (wink-wink)

............ Phil

phil, why are you still here? you gain nothing (no one here is as
knowledgeable as you), and you give nothing.

absolutely NO ONE wants you here. everyone here is in a group
throwing rocks at you, yelling at you to GO AWAY. it's rather
pathetic, and i'm kinda getting embarrassed for you.

is australian english so different that perhaps the meaning isn't
conveyed?

hmmm. think of yourself as an electron. now, think of this group as
having about -1MVolt potential. you're an australio-electro-physics
genius -- do you understand now?
