It had a permanent magnet as the erase head! Later, I had a Pioneer, descendant cassette deck. Included schematic. I even attempted to do a half-speed dub from vinyl to tape; worked, but I guess equalization screwed things up. But, on the schematic was a HF oscillator. That's when it dawned on me, the erase head was actually a record head, but erased by obliterating prerecorded material with High Frequency (HF), maybe 40+ kHz!
